Onward (2020) - Review (USA)

By Bashayer Mohammed A Alharbi

Onward is a family movie suitable for all family members. It is Pixar’s newest film, the leading company in the animation film industry that brings us back to passionate work of perfection. The Onward story revolves around a world of magical creatures who have forgotten how to use magic due to not regularly using it, as well as the spread of technology. With this world, the hero discovers during his 16th birthday celebration with his brother and her mother that his deceased father left the family a magic that may somehow enable them to see their father again.

One of the movie's strengths is that it is directed by Dan Scanlon. Onward is his second known movie after Monster University. Firstly, the film is original in all the meaning of the word, a world of imagined magic, and the story is not taken from a novel or an earlier legend. Secondly, the establishing scenes at the beginning of the film introduce us to the film's world and pave the way for events that are among the smartest that can appear in a cinematic work. Third, and as usual, Pixar confirms its superior ability to create details by drawing and moving them. The case with all the elements of the movie scenes presented accurately and clearly that almost mimics nature. Fourth, lan the hero of the film is a shy, introverted young man who does not have confidence in himself and is unaware of his potential and is in a state of a constant search for what he can be distinguished in him and his adventure will constitute a motive for much-frustrated youth to believe in themselves and their abilities. Finally, what distinguishes the film most is the performance of the voice actors, the character of the role of mother, presented by Julia Louis. Ian was voiced by Tom Holland and conveyed all the teenage and mixed feelings experienced by the character. As for the one who outperformed all the actors, it is Chris Pratt, who played the older brother of the hero Barley, where he managed to convince us at the beginning of the film with ideas about him. we will reconsider all of them with his success in persuading us to reverse them in the end.

The biggest flaw in the film is the lack of use of comedy in general throughout the length of the film. In particular, during the adventure the two brothers go through when meeting their father after they successfully only half way. film’s classification tends towards being more adventures than being comedic , which is different and strange for Pixar films. Another annoying thing in the film is the lack of songs, although the film contains human and emotional feelings, it lacks the music that would improve the movie in my opinion. The film carries a simple and clear message. Family and family reunification, in general, could have been the two brothers' adventures were more complicated, better and smarter, but what we watched can be considered a victory for the simple essence of the story. The story was not entertaining and exciting, despite it being about a magical world and strange creatures that did not fit this film on the level of the well-known Pixar. Finally, some incredible things disturb the escalation of drama and sympathy with the characters, for example, the appearance of the father in the lower part of his body only, which makes the events confusing, unattractive and difficult to build a relationship with this character in particular. Onward is a fun movie, but it is hard to watch it again.
