Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) : 3/5 STARS

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) is a Thriller and Action film, which is the 6th instalment of the Mission: Impossible film series; written, produced and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The film starts as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) tries to obtain three spheres of plutonium all while August Walker (Henry Cavill) monitors him and his IMF team. A group called the Apostles are trying to use the plutonium to bomb three religious landmarks in; Rome, Jerusalem and Saudi Arabia. The IMF team find themselves in a rat race to find and dispose of the plutonium, by any means necessary but they’re met with a few surprises along the way. A film involving revenge, betrayal and a magnificent cliff climbing scene that viewers of the trailer were most excited for. With this 6th film being directed by Christopher McQuarrie, it makes him the first to direct more than one film in this series, after his previous work with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015). Which was a success, winning Best Thriller and Best Actor in an Action movie for Tom Cruise.

Along with the other movies in the franchise, Tom Cruise plays the protagonist Ethan Hunt. He is joined by his usual IMF team were Ving Rhames plays Luther Stickell and Simon Pegg plays Benji Dunn. Rebecca Ferguson plays Ilsa Faust and since this movie was released she has gone to star in horror movie Doctor Sleep (2019) which she won two awards for. Other notable actors who featured are Sean Harris, Angela Bassett and Henry Cavill. Although Tom Cruise is best known for his Mission Impossible movies, he’s been in plenty others considering he started acting in the 1980’s. Most memorably starring in Top Gun (1986); one of my dad’s favourites, and Vanilla Sky (2001). He has won awards for his performances in Mission: Impossible 2 (2000), The Last Samurai (2003) and Vanilla Sky (2001) among others. When I think of action movies I think of actors such as Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Dwayne Johnson and Arnold Schwarsenegger as they are some of the best and most popular. The action genre in itself features more masculine characters, featuring mostly men protagonists and displaying the damsel in distress trope all too often.

In Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) the women are seen as less helpless, especially the award winning Rebecca Ferguson as she’s still considered a love interest but while being a badass independent woman. With this being an action film with plenty of fight scenes, I feel slightly bias since these are my favourite genres to watch and every time a new Mission Impossible film is released I immediately book a cinema ticket. Although, perhaps six films is enough for one franchise? With the seventh movie on the way I’m not sure what it will consist of. That being said, if you’re interested in the action genre then I recommend you give this film a watch as it’s car chasing scenes and surprise twists are enough to keep you hooked until the end.
