Capone (2020) - Review (USA)

By Bashayer Mohammed A Alharbi

It is one of the most anticipated films in 2020, starring Tom Hardy, who wonderfully plays different characters. The film story is about Capone, one of the most dangerous criminals in history. The story of the film narrates the events of the last year of Capone's life. The film gives us the end of the character and his personal suffering in the previous days due to illness. A person under 50 years of age and afflicted with dementia contracted this disease because he was infected with syphilis and was unable to be treated at the right time. This disease affected his mind until it reached a stage where he could not control his behaviour, and he began behaving like a small child.

The film shows the character's suffering and deterioration amid the family's suffering, wife's misery, and children's suffering. They watch this character's breakdown while they cannot do anything. Here is where the problem appears in the film. You see the suffering of this person, but you do not know how this character started. Anyone outside of America or anyone who does not know about Capone and his criminal history will find it very difficult to associate with a personality. Capone was a criminal who was living the life of royalty in Chicago, America in the 1920s. He became the leader of one of the most significant gangs in Chicago in the mid-twenties. The gang was making an annual income of $ 100,000,000.The gang has activities in almost all criminal fields, such as prostitution, theft, gambling, murder, etc. The film is a lengthy snapshot of a Capone hallucination interspersed with glimpses of his childhood and his criminal life. Unfortunately, the film is not linked to the storytelling disjointed as if the entire film is a hallucination. In general, biographical films for any character 80% of the story's events are known to the viewer. Some documents prove their authenticity and 20% of ؜events from the writer's imagination for the drama. Still, in this movie and because all the events occur in Capone's house in his last days, the intimate events in his isolation the other cannot know about. it has to be from the writer's imagination, almost the equation in this film was reversed by 80% the writer's imagination and 20% real events.

The strength of this film is the representation of Tom Hardy who was able to convey to the viewer the suffering in a considerable way, the suffering of the character with her illness, the suffering of the character with frequent hallucinations. But with the absence of coherent storytelling, it was difficult for Tom to give us other dimensions of this character. On the other hand, even viewers who are familiar with the Capone story will face a correlation problem. In general, the film is depressing and disjointed, not befitting the abilities of Tom Hardy in acting. The film tries to convey one message, how a person always and forever his bad deeds will chase him, and it is possible to chase him in the worst days of his life.
